PhD Project

  • First supervisor: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Uli Meyer
  • Peer Mentor: Stefanie Raible, M.A.
Institute of Soziologie/ Department of Sociology with a focus on Innovation and Digitalization (SID)
  • Scientific Field(s): Sociology, visualization research and design researech
  • Topic of the PhD project: The PhD project ‘Visualizing The Digital Transformation’ examines visualisation approaches from art and design as well as from other fields and explores their epistemic potential for sociological and interdisciplinary digitalisation research. The aim is to analyse (i.e. understand/explain) and help shape phenomena of digital transformation with visual approaches from various disciplines. The project is located at the interface of sociology, design and art.

Digital transformation is a complex socio-technical process characterised by diverse interactions between social, technical and aesthetic aspects. Sociologists have so far mainly emploied text-based approaches to analyse it, while visual approaches remain largely untapped. In other sciences and professions, visual approaches are common practice without phenomena being fully analysed as socio-technical. The question also arises how new forms of digital data can be utilised. The aim of the dissertation is to make visualisation approaches from art, design, etc. usable for sociological and interdisciplinary digitalisation research.
