At the research group of the tenure-track position “Alternative Methods to Animal Testing” (headed by Ass.-Prof. DI (FH) Verena Charwat, PhD), a position as University Assistant with a doctorate/PhD is being offered.

The research group of the tenure-track position “Alternative Methods to Animal Testing” focuses on developing alternatives to animal testing using cell and tissue culture methods. The aim is to create innovative products and protocols that enable new insights in medical research without relying on animal experiments. The group’s main research focus is currently the heart, with plans to expand to other organs within the next year.

Job Duties::

  • Establishment of an independent research profile
  • Independent management of research projects revolving around the use of cell and tissue culture approaches in combination with technological innovation (e.g. microfluidics, biosensors, 3D printing, bioinformatics) to develop new strategies for non-animal models: planning and project management, experimentation, laboratory maintenance, communication with project partners, data analysis and data presentation
  • Leading role in the establishment and operation of a core facility “Alternatives to Animal Testing.
  • Developing new project ideas
  • Setup of new equipment, methods and protocols
  • Compilation, analysis, interpretation, and publication of collected data in scientific journals and at conferences
  • Participation in teaching, including supervision of Bachelor’s, Master’s, and doctoral/PhD students
  • Diligent documentation and preparation of protocols and reports
  • Training and onboarding of new members of the research group
  • Active participation in the scientific community e.g. conference contributions, reviews, event organization, community outreach
  • Organizational and administrative tasks in the group, department and university

Your Qualifications::

  • The successful candidate must hold a finished PhD in relevant biomedical or technological discipline (e.g. bioengineering, molecular biology, human medicine, nanotechnology)
  • Track record in the interdisciplinary field of biotechnology with hands-on experience in translational aspects such as biosensors, organ-on-a-chip devices and microfabrication.
  • Proficiency in cell culture including advanced techniques (3D cultures, co-cultures) and cell analysis desired
  • Advantage: knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas: stem cell cultures and differentiation (iPSC, cardiomyocytes), microfluidics, CAR T-cells, CRISPR/Cas9, NGS, metabolic analysis.
  • Experience with bioinformatics analysis preferred (e.g. R, Python, MATLAB, ImageJ, NGS analysis, AI tools)
  • Experience with animal studies preferred (ideally FELASA C certificate).
  • Experience and/or training on 3Rs of animal testing
  • Well-rounded scientific background (strong publication record, reviewer activity, teaching experience, project planning, etc)
  • Demonstrated success in an interdisciplinary scientific environment (e.g. pre-clinical and clinical medicine, biology, engineering, bioinformatics)
  • High level of self-organization, independence and reliability
  • Strong social and leadership competence; efficient communication skills
  • Enthusiasm for continuous learning
  • Demonstrated ability to train and guide (e.g. supervision of bachelor students)
  • Teaching experience desirable
  • Motivation, commitment, integrity, flexibility, and resilience
  • Excellent proficiency in English and German is required (German level B2 and English level C1))
