In recent years, the School of Medicine at Johannes Kepler University Linz (JKU) has successfully established itself as an innovative hub for medical education and research. With its modern medical campus located in close proximity to Kepler University Hospital, the school offers researchers an attractive and productive environment for training, research, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

The Department of Anesthesiology and Surgical Intensive Care Medicine is seeking to fill a position as a Data Scientist for the implementation and execution of projects in the field of artificial intelligence, with a work schedule of 20 hours per week:

Job Duties::

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of machine learning and data science projects within the research group, as well as, where appropriate, in interdisciplinary teams and interdisciplinary clinical research projects at the University Clinic for Anesthesiology and Surgical Intensive Care Medicine
  • Further development of pipelines for automation, data validation, and data provision using innovative, experimental approaches
  • Working with databases from the data warehouse in a hospital setting, e.g., i.s.h.med (SAP), Centricity High Acuity
  • Preparation of clinical data for data science and machine learning projects, e.g., annotation, visualization, sparse data handling, aggregation, augmentation
  • Statistical analysis and interpretation, visualization of results, and clear documentation
  • Working in a Linux/Ubuntu-based development environment and utilizing HPC resources for data-intensive analyses and modeling processes
  • (Increasingly independent) work on individual subprojects as a team member within established research projects, depending on experience and expertise

Your Qualifications::

  • Degree in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Strong programming skills in Python and SQL, particularly as applied to machine learning projects
  • Experience with machine learning architectures and algorithms
  • Experience using Agentic AI and automating workflows, e.g., code assistance tools
  • Basic understanding of modern software engineering principles, such as clean code, version control, reproducible workflows in teams, reproducibility, automated testing, modular design, and parallelization
  • Experience in analyzing, processing, and enriching large datasets, ideally in a medical or clinical setting
  • Understanding of the need to handle sensitive data responsibly and in compliance with existing standards, guidelines, and recommendations
  • Experience with Linux in HPC environments
  • A structured, meticulous, and team-oriented approach to work
  • Language proficiency: German and English at least C1 level
