A new research group has been established at the tenure-track position “Mechanism Exploration of Rare Diseases”at the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at Johannes Kepler University Linz, led by Dr. Tauer. This group focuses on exploring the mechanisms behind rare diseases and is located at the Center for Medical Research.

To further develop this research group, we are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated university assistant with a completed diploma or master's degree (PhD student). The position requires a commitment of 26 hours per week, with the potential for increased hours upon successful acquisition of third-party funding.

The research focuses on investigating the molecular mechanisms that contribute to the development of rare diseases in children, specifically targeting bone, muscle, growth, epilepsy, and metabolic disorders. The work will involve in vitro, ex vivo, and preclinical models.

Job Duties::

  • Application of molecular genetic, protein biochemical, metabolic, cell biological, and immunological methods (e.g., cloning, qRT-PCR, Western blot, histology, immunoassays, flow cytometry)
  • Genetic manipulation of primary cells and cell lines using CRISPR-Cas9 and episomal vectors
  • Cultivation, differentiation, and reprogramming of stem cells, including the generation of induced pluripotent stem cells
  • Conducting in vitro and ex vivo experiments and functional assays
  • Isolation and cultivation of primary cells from tissue biopsies (e.g., skin, bone)
  • Experimental work with preclinical models
  • Development and establishment of new experimental techniques and research strategies
  • Close collaboration with scientists from the University Clinic for Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, the Center for Medical Research, and international partners
  • Independent research with precise documentation of experiments
  • Participation in scientific projects Publications, reports, and the preparation of the dissertation
  • Participation in teaching

Your Qualifications::

  • Completed diploma or master's degree in molecular biology, biology, biochemistry, or comparable qualification
  • Knowledge of common molecular biology methods; expression, purification, and characterization of DNA, RNA, and proteins (Western blot, histology, qRT-PCR), cell culture (primary cell lines, 3D models), immunoassays, immunohistochemistry, and flow cytometry. Previous experience with stem cell reprogramming and/or stem cell culture and differentiation is desirable
  • Experience with preclinical models is an advantage
  • Willingness to learn, optimize, and establish new methods
  • Ability to work both independently and in an international research team
  • Good German and English skills (level B2+)
