A successful applicant for this position will be part of a doctoral training and research network combining the multidisciplinary expertise of 15 research laboratories at renowned EU and UK scientific institutions. This network aims to better understand the complex and multilayered process of tissue regeneration, particularly the regulatory mechanisms of heart, brain, and eye regeneration in the unique and highly tractable zebrafish model system. To this end, the network applies a variety of techniques, from computational and developmental biology, including experimental work, bioinformatics, genomics, and visualization.

The Visual Data Science Lab, as one of the network’s computational nodes, will contribute to the network through novel dimension reduction and visualization techniques, with a focus on single-cell and gene regulation data.

Job Duties::

  • Conduct original scientific research in the fields of visualization, explainable AI, and/or bioinformatics
  • Collaborate with scientists and students working in other fields covered by the research network
  • Work towards obtaining a PhD in computer science or artificial intelligence
  • Publish scientific findings in renowned international journals and at conferences
  • Complete trainings, short-term research stays, and/or secondments at international collaboration partners
  • Provide support to manage the project and the institute’s general administration activities

Your Qualifications::

  • A diploma/Master’s degree in a relevant discipline (computer science, artificial intelligence, mathematics, bioinformatics, statistics, or similar) or equivalent qualifications
  • The successful candidate must have either: (i) a strong biology or bioinformatics background with an affinity for programming and the willingness to dive into the field of visualization; or (ii) a strong visualization background with a willingness to dive into bioinformatics and genomics
  • Strong programming skills in web technologies (e.g., HTML5, D3.js, Java Script) and scripting languages (Python and R) are of advantage
  • Additionally, expertise in machine learning, explainable AI, data mining, and/or statistics is beneficial
  • Strong motivation and commitment to research
  • Willingness and ability to work in a team
  • Strong command of English (level C1); German skills are a plus
  • Mobility requirement: Applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (e.g. work, studies) in Austria for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date

  • On the basis of full-time employment (40 hours/week) the minimum salary in accordance with the collective agreement is € 3,714.80 gross per month (14 x per year, CA Job Grade: B1). A monthly mobility allowance of € 600 is paid in addition to the salary. Applicants with families are eligible for an additional family allowance.
