For our emerging research group "Transformative Healthcare with AI", we are looking for an Agentic AI Research Engineer / PostDoc, initially for a fixed term of 4 years with an option to extend, to lead the design and implementation of a production-quality agentic AI system in medical neuroscience which spans the full pipeline from autonomous information retrieval in clinical systems to a VLM-based, clinician-queryable decision support tool grounded in medical data modalities.

Our interdiscplinary research group is part of the University Department of Neurology at the Faculty of Medicine at JKU Linz, which, in addition to its function as a center for maximum clinical care, focuses on pathophysiological and clinical research across the spectrum of neurological diseases. We are operating at the intersection of clinical neurology, neuroimaging and artificial intelligence and realize technical solutions for personalized patient care. In our research, we are combining state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms with software engineering best practices to provide tangible outcomes for individual patients. Our mission is to algorithmically embrace inter-individual variability across various neuroscientific data modalities and create personalized model contexts, tailoring medical data analysis to the unique needs of each individual.

This position offers true end‑to‑end ownership of a clinically meaningful agentic AI system, from raw clinical data to a deployed, clinician‑queryable tool. You will work in close collaboration with neuroscientists, clinicians, and AI researchers and have the opportunity to substantially contribute to and meaningfully shape the development of a young, dynamic, and interdisciplinary research lab.

Job Duties::

  • Developing an independent research profile
  • Engineer retrieval pipelines that ground agent outputs in verifiable clinical and scientific knowledge
  • Design and implement modular, protocol-driven agentic workflows for real-world clinical and research scenarios, integrating context engineering best-practices for working memory assembly, context compression, semantic grounding, and procedural scaffolding
  • Develop custom integrations and APIs to connect agentic workflows with clinical systems and research infrastructure
  • Operate in and contribute to a high-end software engineering and DevOps environment: clean interfaces, version control, CI/CD pipelines, containerisation, and rigorous automated testing
  • Advise ongoing research projects on agentic AI design, context engineering strategies, and LLM-based workflow integration
  • Participation in infrastructural and organizational duties
  • Maintaining research networks within and beyond JKU
  • Acquisition of third-party funding and leadership of independent research projects
  • Supervision of Bachelor’s, Master’s, and doctoral/PhD students
  • Contribution to the department’s teaching activities

Your Qualifications::

  • The successful candidate must hold a completed doctoral/PhD degree in computer science, software engineering, artificial intelligence, medical informatics, electrical engineering or a closely related field
  • Strong foundation in software engineering: you build system architectures that work reliably, not demos that work once
  • Demonstrated experience with agentic systems, LLM-based tool use, or workflow orchestration frameworks
  • Hands-on experience with context engineering: RAG pipelines, context window management, memory architectures, prompt design, and retrieval optimisation
  • Proficiency in Python; familiarity with a modern DevOps stack (containerisation, CI/CD, HPC or cloud environments)
  • An engineering mindset: you care about the realization of a reliable system, not just benchmark scores
  • Genuine curiosity about the clinical and scientific problems you are solving
  • Experiences with multimodal AI, vision-language models, or medical data modalities are a plus, as well as knowledge about clinical interoperability standards, medical data formats and/or FAIR data principles
  • Very good command of English (level C1/B2) and good command of German (level B1), or a willingness to learn German

What We Offer::

  • On the basis of full-time employment (40 hours/week) the minimum salary in accordance with the collective agreement is € 5,014.30 gross per month (14 x per year, CA Job Grade: B1)
  • Stable employer
  • Attractive campus environment with good public transportation connections
  • Attractive continual educational opportunities
  • State-of-the-art research infrastructure
  • Dynamic research environment
  • Broad range of on-campus dining services/healthy meals (organic food at the cafeteria)
  • Exercise and sports classes (USI)
  • …and much more

Application due date::
