The Johannes Kepler University Linz (JKU Linz) and the Technische Universität Wien (TU Wien) are joining forces to establish a Doctoral College for Computational Sustainability, combining the strengths and competences of complementary disciplines at both universities, and aiming to create and approve transdisciplinary knowledge in key research areas of computational sustainability. The aspirational vision of the Doctoral College is a world in which computational sciences significantly contribute, support, drive and foster global, regional and national efforts towards sustainable development.

For this joint Doctoral College, we invite applications from outstanding candidates eager to contribute to cutting-edge research in computational sustainability.

The successful candidate will pursue a PhD project with the following working title:

Human-AI Interaction for Sustainability (HAI4S): Green Prompting Strategies and Eco-Feedback for Efficient Use of Large Language Models

Job Duties::

  • Conduct dedicated empirical research, in particular on Human–AI Interaction for Sustainability (HAI4S)
  • Publish regularly in peer-reviewed venues and participate in academic conferences and workshops
  • Maintain regular exchange and collaboration with colleagues at the LIT Robopsychology Lab and the Doctoral College for Computational Sustainability
  • Contribute to university teaching and deliver courses
  • (Co-)supervision and guidance of students in seminar and thesis work
  • Support organizational and administrative tasks and contribute to science communication and outreach activities

Your Qualifications::

  • The successful candidate must hold a completed diploma or master’s degree in Psychology/Human-Computer Interaction/Communication Studies, OR in Computer Science/Artificial Intelligence; with a clear willingness to acquire complementary disciplinary competencies to the extent required by this doctoral project
  • Good knowledge of empirical research methods and data analysis techniques, ideally prior experience in empirical research on human-machine interaction
  • Clear and precise academic writing skills, particularly for preparing scientific manuscripts
  • Very good English proficiency (C1); German skills are an advantage
  • Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and reliability
  • Willingness to work in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary teams, strong social skills
  • Strong motivation to pursue a dissertation (cumulative, based on several high-quality journal and conference papers)
